“Adonde Esta Shakira,” “ <3 Donatella,” and “I just saw Lindsay Lohan!” read the writing on the wall as the dust settled at last night’s Whitney Studio Party. In an age where writing on someone’s wall has become an entirely commonplace form of electronic communiqué, the Whitney reminded its patrons just how chic old-fashioned graffiti can be. Guests including Mischa Barton, Leigh Lezark, and those mentioned above shared their thoughts, words, and pictures on several giant paper canvases covering the perimeter of the museum’s tented courtyard space.
That so many attendees took a moment to post on the Whitney’s wall is a testament to the creativity of the crowd, which included legendary artists Jeff Koons, Marilyn Minter, Ellsworth Kelly, Chuck Close, and Cindy Sherman. It is also a barometer of the spirit that the Whitney brings out in its supporters, as almost every partygoer from Fabiola Beracasa to honoree Leonard Lauder stopped to pick up a pen and leave his or her personal message to the institution. This was no small feat at a party comprised of such jaw-droppers as a live performance by Jennifer Hudson, Hollywood eye candy in the form of Gerard Butler and Jet Li, and Taylor Momsen jumping into the DJ booth to spin tunes as Lake Bell and Mamie Gummer danced nearby.
Who knows? After such an engaging enterprise, perhaps next year’s fête will allow guests to tweet messages to each other using live birds…
