Artist Bio<br /> <br /> Visual artist and musician Renzo Ortega was born in Peru in 1974, and grew up in Lima during a time of civil war, kidnappings, and constant violence.<br /> <br /> After an adolescence spent deeply involved in the city's underground punk and street artist subcultures, he studied painting at La Escuela Nacional Superior Autonoma de Bellas Artes de Peru a university where the art-making process was closely entwined with young Peruvians struggle for social justice and free expression under then-dictator Alberto Fujimori.<br /> <br /> Renzo graduated in 1999 with the First Honorific Mention in Painting.<br /> <br /> In 2000 he came to New York City, where he continued his studies through a merit scholarship at the Art Students League. He quickly became part in the New York's arts community, in part through his involvement with Local Project, a Long Island City-based artists collective since 2003.<br /> <br /> In 2006 his artwork was selected to be part of the Queens International Biennial at the Quens Museum of Art. showing the series of drawings \"Black series\" and \"The Game\" , in 2007 showing his personal journals in THE S-FILES Bienal at El Museo Del Barrio, New York.<br /> <br /> Other current projects include No Violence Music and the Resistance Music Festival, a series of concerts Renzo has organized and seek to promote peace and social consciousness among youth; and R-Tronika, a politically-conscious, multilingual <br /> electro-punk group which Renzo fronts as a singer and keyboardist.<br /> <br /> Renzo's work is held in public and private collections in New York like El Museo del Barrio, Europe and South America; other places his art has appeared are: New York; Post Platano, a Bronx Council of the Arts group show at the Hostos Community College gallery; a mural project for the City Wide Harm Reduction program in the Bronx; and video projections for numerous music festivals such as \"Reality of Ciudad Juarez\" at Don Hill\'s in New York and the RHYMEX: Mexican Hip Hop Across Borders festival at The Heckscher Theater of the Museo del Barrio in New York.<br /> <br /> Renzo lives and works in Long Island City, Queens<br />
