The Smoker
Oil on Wood

Sagato uses old masters techniques in conjunction with more current and sometimes experimental lighting and colors to depict themes that are sarcastic in their sense of humor or even absurd. He does this while keeping a feeling of drama and seriousness to the mood of the work. Most recently he has been exploring the themes of balance, duality, and interconnectivity. His last series, The Play of Shine and Shade, investigates androgyny, reincarnation, love, and the ego.

Sagato's work uses the human form in surreal positions, intelligently crafting a piece that captures our attention and then, once lured in, invites us to unravel various associations. Without using conventional representations, his work arrives at its own symbolism; in "Gas Masks" read an almost surrealistic impression, a post-911 apocalyptic message that portrays balance depicted by the yin and yang shape created by the bodies; "Heart" resembles the exact shape of the humanheart, the flow of the elements in the composition (her gaze, connected bodies) leads our eyes around in a circular motion, the same path in which blood flows through the heart, thus bringing our eyes around and around.

Sagato was recently awarded the Helen Wohlberg Lambert Award and Grant, and CMYK magazine named Michael as one of their 20 favorite artists. His publications include a Rude and Star magazines, The New York Gallery Guide, Fashion Weekly, CMYK magazine and Blackbook.

He has had one solo exhibition at New York's Milk Gallery, and a series of prestigious group shows and competitions, including Art Basil, Vogue magazine's auction, palmbeach3, and Palm Beach International.

His work is in the Sackler family, Ben Foster and Danny Masterson's collections.
