Oil on Wood

Madelon’s work as an artist has always been about color, light, movement and texture. The paintings in this exhibition reflect a continuing interest in combining printmaking and painting techniques on paper. “Paper is a material I have loved since my beginnings as an aratist. Hand-made papers stand up best to the rigors of my painting techniques and are used in most of my paintings, mono-prints and mixed media pieces.”                 Madelon uses oil based ink and paint to create abstractions rich in color and depth and attacks her surfaces using brushes, hand rollers, fingers, hands, paper towels, “and any other tool that will do the job at the moment,” working and re-working the surface until the desired effect is obtained. Many of the resulting images have an ageless quality and call to mind the textures and colors of ancient cultures.                 In the words of one reviewer: “Madelon Jones gives form to the unseen yet omnipresent aspects of nature: the principles of flux and creation.  In many of her paintings, a loose grid of organic, pulsating lines serves as the organizing compositional element.  The near perpendicularity of these marks creates tension, intimates a clash of opposing forces.  Spatial, linear and color relations are most complex at the center of her compositions, a formal trend that enables each work to function as a stage for this dramatic collision of forces to play out.  The tension itself is a primal one: the viewer, in relating to these works, feels gripped by the push and pull of the pulsating rhythm that Jones’s gestures produce.”                  Madelon’s work can be found in museums, private collections and corporate headquarters through out the world.  Recent shows: Causey Contemporary Art Gallery, NYC – 2008, Ceres Gallery, NYC – 2008, Carrie Haddad Gallery, Hudson, NY – 2008 and 2010  Madelon has been invited to participate in the 2009 Biannual Exhibition in Florence, Italy. She has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions through out her career. She Graduated from UCLA with a BFA in painting and did graduate work in NYC at NYU and SVA. madelon@madelonjones.com 845-482-3738
