After Graduating Tyler School of Fine Arts at Tample University, Lynn Matsuoka worked for 4 years in New York City as a fashion and editorial artist. Her forte is doing quick reportage from life, and she covered a number of Watergate Hearings for the major TV networks. CBS told Matsuoka she was the best and hired her to cover the first Watergate Trial, but she went to Japan for 6 months, discovered her subject in the world of Japanese Sumo and didn't return for 36 years.
“Few artists so completely dominate their field that their name becomes
synonymous with the subject matter, but Lynn Matsuoka has succeeded in
capturing the essence of Sumo and has won a loyal following along the
way” reported CNN.“Like Degas with his dancers, Lynn Matsuoka set out to depict the particularbeauty of performers who devote their lives to an all-encompassing craft, capturing the nuances of the world they create in the process. Herown devotion was noted, and doors opened that had never been openedbefore, to anyone”. Lynn Matsuoka has worked with Sumo, Kabuki Theater, Bunraku (puppet
theater), Geisha, and Maiko (young Geisha) in Japan for the last 36 years. A
color commentator on the NHK TV worldwide Sumo broadcast for 15 years,
she has acted as liaison/translator for NBC sports, The Asia Society, President
Carter, & National Geographic Society among many othersThis award winning artist has also put her skills to work with NativeAmericans, ballet, equestrian events, film, hula dancing, major league baseball, musicians, the NFL, and theater. She documented the Watergatehearings for ABC & CBS before moving to Japan. Milton Glaser describedLynn Matsuoka as “probably the greatest living reportage artist”.Matsuoka’s first book “The Scent of Binsuke” was published in 1981 and sheis currently working on an autobiographical novel and a Sumo cookbook. Her Equestrian artwork has been seen on the COVER of Dan's weekly magazine during the Hampton Classic 2 years ago and will be seen again on the Jul 22 cover.
