With this most recent body of work, I wanted to delve into the representation of space as it relates to color. Not only the creation of space through simple color combinations, but also the break down or disintegration of that space through simple formal decisions.
The dramatic bands that stutter and smear across the surface are meant to exist in a very different space from that of the solid fields of color introduced on top. Although the solid fields of color have a similar layering of both opaque and translucent colors as the bands, they produce a very different visual effect. The bands slide across the surface of the works leaving abrasions and mottling that combine with underlying layers through both optical proximity and physical transparency. These visual oscillations are countered by the expanse of a single uniform field of color. These fields simultaneously complement and contradict the movement of the bands of color. Where these forms initially follow the bands in one direction, they introduce right angles that disrupt the spatial structure and implied speed established by the bands.
This dichotomy is meant to advance the work past the visual towards some more palpable form of representation.
