My art lies in the moment when the viewer realizes what they see differs from what they first expected. I am researching and investigating characters’ purposes, and I use characters to interact with an audience. My work portrays characters with abstraction and narratives through drawings and sculptures. I invent graphic characters and draw them using Chinese calligraphy ink strokes. I developed a pattern titled Skullscape, which is a tessellation of geometric shapes where each shape is an abstraction of the human skull. These abstract elements add encoding to the characters and create tension between them and the audience, and this takes the viewers elsewhere from present consciousness. The multiple stories and characters I create are also reflections of my self-perceived identity as a constant stranger and my desire for characters to permeate different genres.
