Arlindo Pintomeira was born in 1946 in Deocriste, Viana do Castelo – Portugal. It was in this very city, in 1966, that he held his first exhibition at the gallery of the Divulgao Bookstore. In 1967 he dropped out of architecture school, and opting for painting, left to Lisbon where he surrounded himself with surrealist painters (Mirio Cesariny, Cruzeiro Seixas, Raul Perez, and Fernanda Assis) and participated in various art inconformist demonstrations. Following a short trip through Africa, he left for Paris in 1972 with Dutch painter, M. De Hartog. Later Pintomeira settled in Amsterdam where he studied painting and cinema. Like in 1967, when painting overcame architecture, now cinema, his highschool passion, captured his focus. After producing his film that would complete his degree (CREA at University of Amsterdam), he dedicated himself entirely to painting, more specifically to surrealism with some of his friends, who called it surreal mannerism, due to influences from 16th and 17th century mannerism, which transitioned between the renaissance and the baroque. In 1978, Pintomeira finished his surreal period with his participation at the Salon Metamorphoses in honor of Reni Magritte which took place at the Grand Palais of Paris. He then passed through a series of landscapes with slight influences of surrealism and also approached historic painting (Portuguese expansion). In the 80's Pintomeira then moved to Amsterdam, and was influenced by various groups and artists. He was especially influenced by a group known as COBRA (Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam). As an effect, he was inspired to work with thick textures, automatic drawing, live colors, primary and complementary combinations and simple motifs. Aside from painting, Pintomeira also dedicated himself to serigraphy, book illustrations, photography and creating cinema posters. Throughout his forty-year career, Pintomeira has held more than fifty individual exhibitions
